Today, the first installment of my dark/low fantasy serial, Voice of the Witness, will be published by Calamities Press. This serial will further explore the world hinted at in my story, Hunt of the Damned. I have decided to post a sort of commentary here on my blog for each installment of this serial. I’ll probably give a little more information on the world of the story and talk a little about what I was trying to do, as a writer, with each part.
It is worth mentioning this is being written referencing the version I submitted. If any changes were made by editor Patrick Marsh, though they are likely minor, I am not yet aware of them. This will likely be the case with every commentary I post.
Now, if you’ve read this episode, you’re aware that it starts with a brief excerpt from the travel journal of Zacharia, who is to be the main character in this serial. Honestly, doing this came pretty late in the process of writing this piece. I like it, though, and I now intend to begin every episode the same way. I think it can be a stand alone thought but set the tone for the episode at the same time. I think it will work really well in serial format. When I eventually edit this serial into a single larger piece, these little journal entries will likely be removed entirely or included only in an appendix.
Notice that the first word in the piece, after the journal introduction and the date, is the name Zacharia. That was done very intentionally. Most episodes of this serial will center around Zacharia. While all will be written in the third person, they will usually be limited with a focus on this individual character. However, I intend to do some episodes from the perspective of other characters. I wanted a way to let you know who will be the star of a particular episode without just putting their name in bold up top along with the date. Since most will be about Zacharia, I felt that would look silly. What I came up with instead is what I have done here. Each episode will begin with the name of the character who is to be the focus of it. This is also something that is likely to get edited away when I eventually make this into a single piece.
I expect a possible complaint about this first episode is being too descriptive. I felt it was the right thing to do at the very beginning, however. In exploring this world, I want to breathe life into it. I want to show the things you would see in the world in your life. I want to place it all out before the reader and let them take it in as they will. I’ll likely back off a bit as I go on but I felt this was very important in the introductory portion of the story.
That’s all I’ve got for now. I apologize for my thoughts being a bit disorderly here, I am quite tired at the moment. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments or contact me on Facebook, Twitter, or by e-mail.
